Somebody was gently shaking his shoulder, and he came back to complete consciousness with a start, and wriggled over to see the Admiral's secretary bending over him.	Кто-то мягко тряс его за плечо. Он резко пришел в сознание, заворочался и увидел склонившегося над собой секретаря.
"The Admiral will dine within the hour, sir," he said.	- Адмирал обедает через час, сэр, - сказал тот.
"Captain Calendar thought you might prefer to have a little time in which to prepare."	- Капитан Календер подумал, что вам нужно будет время приготовиться.
"Yes," grunted Hornblower.	- Да, - отвечал Хорнблауэр ворчливо.
He fingered instinctively the long stubble on his unshaven chin.	Он машинально потрогал щетину на подбородке.
"Yes."	- Да.
The secretary was standing very stiff and still, and Hornblower looked up at him curiously.	Секретарь стоял очень скованно, и Хорнблауэр взглянул на него с любопытством.
There was an odd, set expression on the secretary's face, and he held a newspaper imperfectly concealed behind his back.	У секретаря было странное, напряженное лицо, за спиной он прятал газету.
"What's the matter?" demanded Hornblower.	- В чем дело? - спросил Хорнблауэр.
"It is bad news for you, sir," said the secretary.	- Плохие вести для вас, сэр, - сказал секретарь.
"What news?"	- Какие вести?
Hornblower's spirits fell down into the depths of despair.	Сердце у него упало.
Perhaps Gambier had changed his mind.	Может быть, Гамбир передумал.
Perhaps he was going to be kept under strict arrest, tried, condemned, and shot.	Может быть, его посадят под строгий арест, будут судить, приговорят и расстреляют.
Perhaps -	Может быть...
"I remembered having seen this paragraph in the Morning Chronicle of three months ago, sir," said the secretary.	- Я вспомнил, что читал об этом в "Морнинг Кроникл" три месяца назад, сэр, - сказал секретарь.
"I showed it to his Lordship, and to Captain Calendar.	- Я показал газету его милости и капитану Календеру.
They decided it ought to be shown to you as early as possible.	Они решили, что вам нужно прочесть как можно скорее.
His Lordship says -"	Его милость сказал...
"What is the paragraph?" demanded Hornblower, holding out his hand for the paper.	- Где читать? - спросил Хорнблауэр, протягивая руку за газетой.
"It is bad news, sir," repeated the secretary, hesitatingly.	- Плохие новости, сэр, - нерешительно повторил секретарь.
"Let me see it, damn you."	- Показывайте, черт вас побери.
The secretary handed over the newspaper, one finger indicating the paragraph.	Секретарь протянул газету, пальцем указывая абзац.
"The Lord giveth, the Lord taketh away," he said.	- Бог дал. Бог взял, - произнес он.
"Blessed be the name of the Lord."	- Благословенно имя Господне.
