They looked like round, pulpy, green roses.	Выглядели они как круглые мясистые зеленые розы.

I knew I had done the wrong thing, and for the rest of the afternoon we walked in silence, moving slowly on the flat valley floor, which was covered with small, sharp-edged rocks. We moved among the cacti, disturbing crowds of lizards and at times a solitary bird.	Шли среди кактусов, вспугивая полчища ящериц, подчас одинокую птицу.

At six o'clock we were at the bottom of the mountains that marked the end of the valley.	К шести вечера мы были у подножья гор на краю долины.
We climbed to a ledge.	Мы взобрались на скалистый уступ.
Don Juan dropped his sack and sat down.	Дон Хуан сбросил рюкзак и сел.
I was hungry again, but we had no food left; I suggested that we pick up the Mescalito and head back for town.	Я опять проголодался, но еды больше не было. Я предложил собрать Мескалито и вернуться.
He looked annoyed and made a smacking sound with his lips. He said we were going to spend the night there.	Он выглядел раздраженным и чмокнул губами, потом сказал, что здесь мы останемся на ночь.
We sat quietly.	Мы спокойно сидели.
There was a rock wall to the left, and to the right was the valley we had just crossed.	Слева была скала, а справа оставшаяся позади нас долина.
It extended for quite a distance and seemed to be wider than, and not so flat as, I had thought. Viewed from the spot where I sat, it was full of small hills and protuberances. "Tomorrow we will start walking back," don Juan said without looking at me, and pointing to the valley.	- Завтра двинемся обратно, - сказал дон Хуан, не глядя на меня и указывая на долину.
"We will work our way back and pick him as we cross the field.	- На обратном пути и будем его собирать.
That is, we will pick him only when he is in our way.	То есть подбирать его мы будем только, когда он окажется прямо на нашем пути.
He will find us and not the other way around.	Это он будет находить нас, и никак иначе.
He will find us - if he wants to."	Если захочет, он нас найдет.
Don Juan rested his back against the rock wall and, with his head turned to his side, continued talking as though another person were there besides myself.	Дон Хуан прислонился к скале и, отвернувшись, продолжал говорить так, будто кроме нас здесь был еще кто-то.
"One more thing.	- Еще одно.
Only I can pick him.	Брать его буду только я.
