I was in a state of shock - strangely cold and rigid, with an oppressive sensation in my chest and ears.	Я был в состоянии шока, в странном холодном жестком напряжении, с ощущением давления в груди и в ушах.

When I recovered from the shock I was really angry with him.	Когда я очнулся, то был здорово на него сердит.

He set up three stones around the fire and placed the pot on top of them.	Он разложил вокруг костра три камня и поставил на них горшок.
To all the ingredients he added something that I took to be a big chunk of carpenter's glue and a pot of water, and let all that boil.	Ко всей смеси в горшке он добавил еще что-то вроде большого куска столярного клея, влил большой ковш воды и оставил все это кипеть.
Datura plants have, by themselves, a very peculiar odor. Combined with the carpenter's glue, which gave off a strong odor when the mixture began to boil, they created so pungent a vapor that I had to fight not to vomit. The mix boiled for a long time as we sat there motionless in front of it.	Смесь долго кипела, а мы все это время неподвижно сидели у костра.
At times, when the wind blew the vapor in my direction, the stench enveloped me, and I held my breath in an effort to avoid it.	Время от времени, когда ветер гнал испарения в мою сторону, меня обволакивало вонью, и я старался не дышать.
Don Juan opened his leather pouch and took the figurine out; he handed it to me carefully and told me to place it inside the pot without burning my hands.	Открыв кожаную сумку, дон Хуан вытащил человечка, бережно передал фигурку мне и велел сунуть в горшок, только осторожно, чтобы не обжечься.
I let it slip gently into the boiling mush.	Фигурка беззвучно скользнула в кипящее варево.
He got out his knife, and for a second I thought he was going to slash me again; instead, he pushed the figurine with the tip of the knife and sank it.	Он вынул нож, и у меня мелькнула мысль, что сейчас он опять будет меня резать, но он просто подтолкнул острием фигурку и утопил ее окончательно.
He watched the mush boil for a while longer, and then began to clean the mortar.	Он еще немного понаблюдал, как кипит варево, а затем принялся чистить ступку.
I helped him.	Я помогал.
When we had finished he set the mortar and pestle against the fence.	Когда мы закончили, он сложил ступку и пестик у забора.
We went inside the house, and the pot was left on the stones all night.	Мы вошли в дом, а горшок оставался на камнях всю ночь.
The next morning at dawn don Juan instructed me to pull the figurine out of the glue and hang it from the roof facing the east, to dry in the sun.	На рассвете дон Хуан велел мне вытащить фигурку из клея и подвесить к кровле, лицом на восток, сохнуть на солнце.
At noon it was stiff as a wire.	К полудню она стала твердой как проволока.
