A small patch of earth beneath its branches was packed hard from many fights and furtive crap games.	И в его тени столько бывало драк и запретных сражений в кости, что земля тут была твёрдая как камень.
The lights in the high school auditorium were blazing in the distance, but they blinded us, if anything.	Впереди сверкали окна школьного зала, но они нас только слепили.
"Don't look ahead, Scout," Jem said.	- Не смотри вперёд, Глазастик, - сказал Джим.
"Look at the ground and you won't fall."	- Смотри под ноги, тогда не упадёшь.
"You should have brought the flashlight, Jem."	- Зря ты не взял фонарик, Джим, - сказала я.
"Didn't know it was this dark.	-Я не знал, что такая темень.
Didn't look like it'd be this dark earlier in the evening.	Думал, ещё будет видно.
So cloudy, that's why.	Это всё из-за туч.
It'll hold off a while, though."	Их, наверно, не скоро разгонит.
Someone leaped at us.	И тут на нас кто-то прыгнул.
"God almighty!" Jem yelled.	Джим как заорет!
A circle of light burst in our faces, and Cecil Jacobs jumped in glee behind it.	В лицо нам ударил свет, это Сесил Джейкобс светил на нас фонариком и так и плясал от восторга.
"Ha-a-a, gotcha!" he shrieked.	- Ага, попались! - вопил он.
"Thought you'd be comin' along this way!"	- Так и знал, что вы пойдёте этой дорогой!
"What are you doin' way out here by yourself, boy?	- Что ты тут один делаешь?
Ain't you scared of Boo Radley?"	Ты разве не боишься Страшилы Рэдли?
Cecil had ridden safely to the auditorium with his parents, hadn't seen us, then had ventured down this far because he knew good and well we'd be coming along.	Родители благополучно доставили Сесила в школу, он увидел, что нас нет, и отправился к дубу - он знал наверняка, что мы придём этой дорогой.
He thought Mr. Finch'd be with us, though.	Только думал, нас проводит Аттикус.
"Shucks, ain't much but around the corner," said Jem.	- Вот ещё! Нам всего-то ходу - за угол завернуть,- сказал Джим.
"Who's scared to go around the corner?"	- Чего ж тут бояться?
We had to admit that Cecil was pretty good, though.	А всё-таки здорово это у Сесила получилось.
He had given us a fright, and he could tell it all over the schoolhouse, that was his privilege.	Он нас и правда напугал и теперь имел право раззвонить об этом по всей школе.
"Say," I said, "ain't you a cow tonight?	- Слушай, - сказала я, - ты же сегодня корова.
Where's your costume?"	Где же твой костюм?
"It's up behind the stage," he said.	- Там, за сценой, - сказал он.
"Mrs. Merriweather says the pageant ain't comin' on for a while.	- Миссис Мерриуэзер говорит, живая картина ещё не скоро.
You can put yours back of the stage by mine, Scout, and we can go with the rest of 'em."	Клади свой костюм за сценой рядом с моим, Глазастик, и пошли к ребятам.
This was an excellent idea, Jem thought.	Джим обрадовался.
