Tom's discomfort was not from the humidity.	Тому было явно не по себе, и не оттого, что он вспотел.
"What did you say then, Tom?" asked Atticus.	- А вы ей что на это ответили, Том? - спросил Аттикус.
"I said somethin' like, why Miss Mayella, that's right smart o'you to treat 'em.	- Я ответил вроде того, что ловко это вы с ними, мисс Мэйелла.
An' she said, 'You think so?'	А она говорит: ты так думаешь?
I don't think she understood what I was thinkin' - I meant it was smart of her to save like that, an' nice of her to treat em."	Только она, видно, меня не поняла... Я-то думал, какая она ловкая, что накопила денег, и какая добрая к детишкам.
"I understand you, Tom.	- Понимаю вас, Том, - сказал Аттикус.

"Well, I said I best be goin', I couldn't do nothin' for her, an' she says oh yes I could, an' I ask her what, and she says to just step on that chair yonder an' git that box down from on top of the chiffarobe."	- Ну, я сказал - я пойду, раз у вас для меня работы нет, а она говорит, есть. Я спросил, какая, а она велела: влезь вой на стул и сними тот ящик с гардероба.
"Not the same chiffarobe you busted up?" asked Atticus.	- Не с того гардероба, который вы порубили на дрова? - спросил Аттикус.
The witness smiled.	Том улыбнулся.
"Naw suh, another one.	- Нет, сэр, это другой.
Most as tall as the room.	Высокий, под самый потолок.
So I done what she told me, an' I was just reachin' when the next thing I knows she - she'd grabbed me round the legs, grabbed me round th' legs, Mr. Finch.	Я снял ящик, стал слезать, а она... она вдруг взяла да... да и обхватила меня, мистер Финч.
She scared me so bad I hopped down an' turned the chair over - that was the only thing, only furniture, 'sturbed in that room, Mr. Finch, when I left it.	Я до того напугался, спрыгнул, стул и опрокинулся... Только этот один стул и опрокинулся, а другое всё по местам стояло, когда я уходил, мистер Финч.
