Raskolnikov heard Nastasya's whisper:	Послышался шепот Настасьи:
"Don't disturb him! Let him sleep. He can have his dinner later."	- Не замай; пущай выспится; опосля поест.
"Quite so," answered Razumihin.	- И впрямь, - отвечал Разумихин.
Both withdrew carefully and closed the door.	Оба осторожно вышли и притворили дверь.
Another half-hour passed.	Прошло еще с полчаса.
Raskolnikov opened his eyes, turned on his back again, clasping his hands behind his head.	Раскольников открыл глаза и вскинулся опять навзничь, заломив руки за голову...
"Who is he?	"Кто он?
Who is that man who sprang out of the earth?	Кто этот вышедший из-под земли человек?
Where was he, what did he see?	Где был он и что видел?
He has seen it all, that's clear.	Он видел все, это несомненно.
Where was he then? And from where did he see?	Где ж он тогда стоял и откуда смотрел?
Why has he only now sprung out of the earth?	Почему он только теперь выходит из-под полу?
And how could he see? Is it possible?	И как мог он видеть - разве это возможно?..
Hm..." continued Raskolnikov, turning cold and shivering, "and the jewel case Nikolay found behind the door--was that possible?	Гм... - продолжал Раскольников, холодея и вздрагивая, - а футляр, который нашел Николай за дверью: разве это тоже возможно?
A clue?	Улики?
You miss an infinitesimal line and you can build it into a pyramid of evidence!	Стотысячную черточку просмотришь - вот и улика в пирамиду египетскую!
A fly flew by and saw it!	Муха летала, она видела!
Is it possible?"	Разве этак возможно?"
He felt with sudden loathing how weak, how physically weak he had become.	И он с омерзением почувствовал вдруг, как он ослабел, физически ослабел.
"I ought to have known it," he thought with a bitter smile. "And how dared I, knowing myself, knowing how I should be, take up an axe and shed blood!	"Я это должен был знать, - думал он с горькою усмешкой, - и как смел я, зная себя, предчувствуя себя, брать топор и кровавиться!
I ought to have known beforehand....	Я обязан был заранее знать...
Ah, but I did know!" he whispered in despair.	Э! да ведь я же заранее и знал!.." - прошептал он в отчаянии.
At times he came to a standstill at some thought.	Порою он останавливался неподвижно перед какою-нибудь мыслию:
"No, those men are not made so. The real _Master_ to whom all is permitted storms Toulon, makes a massacre in Paris, _forgets_ an army in Egypt, _wastes_ half a million men in the Moscow expedition and gets off with a jest at Vilna. And altars are set up to him after his death, and so _all_ is permitted.	"Нет, - те люди не так сделаны; настоящий властелин, кому все разрешается, - громит Тулон, делает резню в Париже, забывает армию в Египте, тратит полмиллиона людей в московском походе и отделывается каламбуром в Вильне; и ему же, по смерти, ставят кумиры; - а стало быть, и все разрешается.
No, such people, it seems, are not of flesh but of bronze!"	Нет, на этаких людях, видно, не тело, а бронза!"
