Raskolnikov sipped the glass, put a morsel of bread in his mouth and, suddenly looking at Zametov, seemed to remember everything and pulled himself together. At the same moment his face resumed its original mocking expression.	- Раскольников глотнул из стакана, положил в рот кусочек хлеба и вдруг, посмотрев на Заметова, казалось, все припомнил и как будто встряхнулся: лицо его приняло в ту же минуту первоначальное насмешливое выражение.
He went on drinking tea.	Он продолжал пить чай.
"There have been a great many of these crimes lately," said Zametov.	- Нынче много этих мошенничеств развелось, -сказал Заметов.
"Only the other day I read in the _Moscow News_ that a whole gang of false coiners had been caught in Moscow.	- Вот недавно еще я читал в "Московских ведомостях", что в Москве целую шайку фальшивых монетчиков изловили.
It was a regular society.	Целое общество было.
They used to forge tickets!"	Подделывали билеты.
"Oh, but it was a long time ago!	- О, это уже давно!
I read about it a month ago," Raskolnikov answered calmly.	Я еще месяц назад читал, - отвечал спокойно Раскольников.
"So you consider them criminals?" he added, smiling.	- Так это-то, по-вашему, мошенники? - прибавил он, усмехаясь.
"Of course they are criminals."	- Как же не мошенники?
"They?	- Это?
They are children, simpletons, not criminals!	Это дети, бланбеки, а не мошенники!
Why, half a hundred people meeting for such an object--what an idea!	Целая полсотня людей для этакой цели собирается! Разве это возможно?
Three would be too many, and then they want to have more faith in one another than in themselves!	Тут и трех дней много будет, да и то чтобы друг в друге каждый пуще себя самого был уверен!
One has only to blab in his cups and it all collapses.	А то стоит одному спьяну проболтаться, и все прахом пошло!
Simpletons!	Бланбеки!
They engaged untrustworthy people to change the notes--what a thing to trust to a casual stranger!	Нанимают ненадежных людей разменивать билеты в конторах: этакое-то дело да поверить первому встречному?
Well, let us suppose that these simpletons succeed and each makes a million, and what follows for the rest of their lives?	Ну, положим, удалось и с бланбеками, положим, каждый себе по миллиону наменял, ну а потом? Всю-то жизнь?
Each is dependent on the others for the rest of his life!	Каждый один от другого зависит на всю свою жизнь!
Better hang oneself at once!	Да лучше удавиться!
And they did not know how to change the notes either; the man who changed the notes took five thousand roubles, and his hands trembled.	А они и разменять-то не умели: стал в конторе менять, получил пять тысяч, и руки дрогнули.
He counted the first four thousand, but did not count the fifth thousand--he was in such a hurry to get the money into his pocket and run away.	Четыре пересчитал, а пятую принял не считая, на веру, чтобы только в карман да убежать поскорее.
