Преступление и наказание

"Why, Mikolka, are you crazy to put a nag like that in such a cart?"	- Да ты, Миколка, в уме, что ли: этаку кобыленку в таку телегу запрег!
"And this mare is twenty if she is a day, mates!"	- А ведь савраске-то беспременно лет двадцать уж будет, братцы!
"Get in, I'll take you all," Mikolka shouted again, leaping first into the cart, seizing the reins and standing straight up in front.	- Садись, всех довезу! - опять кричит Миколка, прыгая первый в телегу, берет вожжи и становится на передке во весь рост.
"The bay has gone with Matvey," he shouted from the cart--"and this brute, mates, is just breaking my heart, I feel as if I could kill her.	- Гнедой даве с Матвеем ушел, - кричит он с телеги, - а кобыленка этта, братцы, только сердце мое надрывает: так бы, кажись, ее и убил, даром хлеб ест.
She's just eating her head off.	Говорю садись!
Get in, I tell you!	Вскачь пущу!
I'll make her gallop!	Вскачь пойдет!
She'll gallop!" and he picked up the whip, preparing himself with relish to flog the little mare.	- И он берет в руки кнут, с наслаждением готовясь сечь савраску.
"Get in! Come along!"	- Да садись, чего! - хохочут в толпе.
The crowd laughed. "D'you hear, she'll gallop!"	- Слышь, вскачь пойдет!
"Gallop indeed! She has not had a gallop in her for the last ten years!"	- Она вскачь-то уж десять лет, поди, не прыгала.
"She'll jog along!"	- Запрыгает!
"Don't you mind her, mates, bring a whip each of you, get ready!"	- Не жалей, братцы, бери всяк кнуты, зготовляй!
"All right!	- И то!
Give it to her!"	Секи ее!
They all clambered into Mikolka's cart, laughing and making jokes.	Все лезут в Миколкину телегу с хохотом и остротами.
Six men got in and there was still room for more.	Налезло человек шесть, и еще можно посадить.
They hauled in a fat, rosy-cheeked woman.	Берут с собою одну бабу, толстую и румяную.
She was dressed in red cotton, in a pointed, beaded headdress and thick leather shoes; she was cracking nuts and laughing.	Она в кумачах, в кичке с бисером, на ногах коты, щелкает орешки и посмеивается.
The crowd round them was laughing too and indeed, how could they help laughing? That wretched nag was to drag all the cartload of them at a gallop!	Кругом в толпе тоже смеются, да и впрямь, как не смеяться: этака лядащая кобыленка да таку тягость вскачь везти будет!
Two young fellows in the cart were just getting whips ready to help Mikolka.	Два парня в телеге тотчас же берут по кнуту, чтобы помогать Миколке.
With the cry of "now," the mare tugged with all her might, but far from galloping, could scarcely move forward; she struggled with her legs, gasping and shrinking from the blows of the three whips which were showered upon her like hail.	Раздается: "ну!", клячонка дергает изо всей силы, но не только вскачь, а даже и шагом-то чуть-чуть может справиться, только семенит ногами, кряхтит и приседает от ударов трех кнутов, сыплющихся на нее, как горох.
