The boy began to cry again.	Мальчик опять заплакал.
"Mother will beat me, sir, if I go back without the medicine."	- Матушка побьет меня, сэр, если я вернусь без лекарства.
"I will take care that your mother doesn't beat you.	- Я позабочусь, чтобы твоя мать не побила тебя.
I am a doctor myself; and I want to see the lady before we get the medicine."	Я сам доктор и хочу видеть эту даму прежде, чем мы купим лекарство.
The announcement of my profession appeared to inspire the boy with a certain confidence. But he still showed no disposition to accompany me to his mother's house.	Объявление моей профессии, по видимому, внушило мальчику некоторое доверие, но он все таки не показывал желания ехать со мной к матери.
"Do you mean to charge the lady anything?" he asked.	- Вы хотите получить плату с этой дамы? -спросил он.
"The money I've got on the ring isn't much.	- Я ведь выручил за перстень немного.
Mother won't like having it taken out of her rent."	Матушка хочет взять эти деньги за квартиру.
"I won't charge the lady a farthing," I answered.	- Я не возьму ничего, - ответил я.
The boy instantly got into the cab.	Мальчик тотчас сел в кеб.
"All right," he said, "as long as mother gets her money."	- Ну, пожалуй, - сказал он, - только бы матушка получила свои деньги.
Alas for the poor!	Увы, бедные люди!
The child's education in the sordid anxieties of life was completed already at ten years old!	Воспитание ребенка в отношении треволнений жизни уже было закончено в десятилетнем возрасте!
We drove away.	Мы поехали.

I KEEP MY APPOINTMENT.	Я ДЕРЖУ СЛОВО
THE poverty-stricken aspect of the street when we entered it, the dirty and dilapidated condition of the house when we drew up at the door, would have warned most men, in my position, to prepare themselves for a distressing discovery when they were admitted to the interior of the dwelling.	Бедная темная улица, когда мы поехали по ней, грязный и ветхий деревянный дом, когда мы остановились у двери, предупредили бы многих в моем положении, что они должны приготовиться к неприятному открытию, когда войдут внутрь жилища.
The first impression which the place produced on my mind suggested, on the contrary, that the boy's answers to my questions had led me astray.	Первое впечатление, которое это место произвело на меня, состояло, напротив, в том, что ответы мальчика на мои вопросы сбили меня с толку.
