Deception Point (Точка обмана)

Rachel gazed out at the silvery path of ice before them and tried to imagine what the hell the administrator of NASA was doing up here.	Рейчел взглянула на простиравшуюся впереди серебристую ледовую дорогу и постаралась представить, какого черта здесь делает администратор НАСА.
"Hold on," the NASA man shouted, working some levers.	- Держитесь! - скомандовал водитель, нажимая на какие-то рычаги.
With a grinding growl, the machine rotated ninety degrees in place like a treaded army tank. It was now facing the high wall of a snow berm.	Со скрипом и рычанием машина развернулась на девяносто градусов, словно тяжелый танк.
Rachel looked at the steep incline and felt a ripple of fear.	Рейчел взглянула на крутой склон и в очередной раз испугалась.
Surely he doesn't intend to-	Не собирается же он...
"Rock and roll!"	- Рок-н-ролл!
The driver popped the clutch, and the craft accelerated directly toward the slope.	Водитель сдвинул рычаг, и, набирая скорость, машина направилась прямиком к склону.
Rachel let out a muffled cry and held on.	Рейчел негромко вскрикнула и ухватилась за поручень.
As they hit the incline, the spiked treads tore into the snow, and the contraption began to climb.	Удивительная машина врезалась в стену, шипованные гусеницы вгрызлись в лед, и они поползли вверх по склону.
Rachel was certain they would tip over backward, but the cabin remained surprisingly horizontal as the treads clawed up the slope.	Рейчел не сомневалась, что с минуты на минуту машина перевернется, однако, как ни странно, кабина сохраняла горизонтальное положение на протяжении всего восхождения.
When the huge machine heaved up onto the crest of the berm, the driver brought it to a stop and beamed at his white-knuckled passenger.	Когда гигантский паук оказался на вершине горы, водитель повернулся и с улыбкой взглянул на побелевшую от ужаса пассажирку:
"Try that in an SUV!	- Недурно, правда?

Rachel gave a wan nod.	Рейчел слабо кивнула:
"Neat."	- Здорово!
Sitting now atop the snow berm, Rachel looked out at the inconceivable view.	С вершины ледяного увала она окинула взглядом немыслимый пейзаж.
One more large berm stood before them, and then the undulations stopped abruptly. Beyond, the ice smoothed into a glistening expanse that was inclined ever so slightly.	Невдалеке возвышалась еще одна гряда, а за ней волнообразный рельеф переходил в плоскость -слегка наклонное, сияющее белизной пространство.
The moonlit sheet of ice stretched out into the distance, where it eventually narrowed and snaked up into the mountains.	Залитая лунным светом равнина уходила вдаль, сужаясь и змеей извиваясь между гор.
"That's the Milne Glacier," the driver said, pointing up into the mountains.	- Ледник Милна. - Водитель показал на горы.
