“Come in (заходите)! Come in! And welcome (и добро пожаловать)!” called a loud, cheery voice from inside (позвал громкий и радостный голос изнутри). Jane’s heart was pitter-pattering with excitement (сердце Джейн заколотилось: «было быстро и часто стучащее от волнения»).

“He is in (он есть дома)!” she signaled to Michael with a look (она подала Майклу знак взглядом).

Mary Poppins opened the door and pushed them in front of her (Мэри Поппинс открыла дверь и втолкнула их впереди себя). A large, cheerful room lay before them (большая, яркая комната предстала перед ними; tolie — лежать; простираться). At one end of it a fire was burning brightly (в одном конце ее камин горел: «был горящий» ярко) and in the centre stood an enormous table laid for tea (а в центре стоял огромный стол, накрытый для чая) — four cups and saucers (четыре чашки и блюдца), piles of bread and butter (горы хлеба и масла), crumpets (оладушки), coconut cakes and a large plum cake with pink icing (кокосовые кексы и большой сливовый пирог с розовой глазурью).

Jane and Michael followed Mary Poppins upstairs. Mary Poppins knocked at the door.

Mary Poppins opened the door and pushed them in front of her. A large, cheerful room lay before them. At one end of it a fire was burning brightly and in the centre stood an enormous table laid for tea — four cups and saucers, piles of bread and butter, crumpets, coconut cakes and a large plum cake with pink icing.

“Well, this is indeed a Pleasure (ну, это и в правду удовольствие),” a huge voice greeted them (громкий: «громадный» голос приветствовал их), and Jane and Michael looked round for its owner (и Джейн с Майклом оглянулись: «посмотрели вокруг» в поисках его обладателя). He was nowhere to be seen (его нигде не было видно: «он был нигде быть видимым»). The room appeared to be quite empty (комната выглядела совсем пустой: «казалась быть совсем пустой»). Then they heard Mary Poppins saying crossly (затем они услышали Мэри Поппинс, говорящую раздраженно):

“Oh, Uncle Albert (о, дядя Альберт)— not again (не опять)? It’s not your birthday, is it (это не твой день рождения, ведь правда: «есть он»)?”

And as she spoke (и когда она заговорила) she looked up at the ceiling (она посмотрела вверх на потолок). Jane and Michael looked up too (Джейн и Майкл посмотрели наверх тоже) and to their surprise saw a round, fat, bald man (и, к своему удивлению, увидели круглого, толстого, лысого мужчину) who was hanging in the air without holding on to anything (который висел: «был висящим» в воздухе без держания за что-либо = ни за что не держась). Indeed (действительно), he appeared to be sitting on the air (он, казалось, сидит: «быть сидящим» на воздухе), for his legs were crossed (так как его ноги были скрещены) and he had just put down the newspaper (и он только что опустил/отложил газету) which he had been reading when they came in (которую читал, когда они вошли).

“Oh, Uncle Albert — not again? It’s not your birthday, is it?”

And as she spoke she looked up at the ceiling. Jane and Michael looked up too and to their surprise saw a round, fat, bald man who was hanging in the air without holding on to anything. Indeed, he appeared to be sitting on the air, for his legs were crossed and he had just put down the newspaper which he had been reading when they came in.

“My dear (моя дорогая),” said Mr Wigg, smiling down at the children (улыбаясь сверху вниз детям), and looking apologetically at Mary Poppins (и глядя, извиняясь/сконфуженно, на Мэри Поппинс), “I’m very sorry (я прошу прощения), but I’m afraid it is my birthday (но боюсь, что это естьмой день рождения).”

“Tch, tch, tch! (ай-яй-яй!)” said Mary Poppins.

“I only remembered last night (я только вспомнил вчера вечером) and there was no time then to send you a postcard asking you to come another day (и не было времени тогда послать тебе открытку, просящую тебя прийти в другой день). Very distressing, isn’t it (очень огорчительно, не так ли)?” he said, looking down at Jane and Michael (смотря вниз на Джейн и Майкла).

“I can see (я могу видеть) you’re rather surprised (вы несколько удивлены),” said Mr Wigg. And, indeed, their mouths were so wide open with astonishment (и правда, их рты были так широко открыты от удивления) that Mr Wigg (что мистер Вигг), if he had been a little smaller (если бы он был чуть поменьше), might almost have fallen into one of them (мог почти упасть внутрь одного из них).
