With all his cruel ferocity and coldness (при всей своей грубой жестокости и холодности) there was an undercurrent of something in Tars Tarkas (у Тарса Таркаса было какая-то скрытая черта; undercurrent — подводное течение; скрытая тенденция) which he seemed ever battling to subdue (которую он, казалось, постоянно стремился подавить: «сражался, чтобы подавить»).
