Terror itself, and the mystery of the unknown, led to his living.	И даже ужасы и тайны неизвестного помогали ему жить.

To have a full stomach, to doze lazily in the sunshine-such things were remuneration in full for his ardours and toils, while his ardours and tolls were in themselves self-remunerative. They were expressions of life, and life is always happy when it is expressing itself.	Полный желудок, ленивая дремота на солнышке -- все это служило волчонку наградой за его рвение и труды, а рвение и труды сами по себе доставляли ему радость.
So the cub had no quarrel with his hostile environment.	И волчонок жил в ладу с окружающей его враждебной средой.
He was very much alive, very happy, and very proud of himself.	Он был полон сил, он был счастлив и гордился собой.

CHAPTER I-THE MAKERS OF FIRE	ГЛАВА ПЕРВАЯ. ТВОРЦЫ ОГНЯ
The cub came upon it suddenly.	Волчонок наткнулся на это совершенно неожиданно.
It was his own fault.	Все произошло по его вине.
He had been careless.	Осторожность -- вот что было забыто.
He had left the cave and run down to the stream to drink.	Он вышел из пещеры и побежал к ручью напиться.
It might have been that he took no notice because he was heavy with sleep. (He had been out all night on the meat-trail, and had but just then awakened.) And his carelessness might have been due to the familiarity of the trail to the pool.	Причиной его оплошности, возможно, было еще и то, что ему хотелось спать. (Вся ночь прошла на охоте, и волчонок только что проснулся.) Но ведь дорога к ручью была ему так хорошо знакома!
He had travelled it often, and nothing had ever happened on it.	Он столько раз бегал по ней, и до сих пор все сходило благополучно.
He went down past the blasted pine, crossed the open space, and trotted in amongst the trees. Then, at the same instant, he saw and smelt.	Волчонок спустился по тропинке к засохшей сосне, пересек полянку и побежал между деревьями, И вдруг он одновременно увидел и почуял что-то незнакомое.
Before him, sitting silently on their haunches, were five live things, the like of which he had never seen before.	Перед ним молча сидели на корточках пять живых существ, -- таких ему еще не приходилось видеть.
It was his first glimpse of mankind.	Это была первая встреча волчонка с людьми.
But at the sight of him the five men did not spring to their feet, nor show their teeth, nor snarl.	Но люди не вскочили, не оскалили зубов и не зарычали на него.
They did not move, but sat there, silent and ominous.	Они не двигались и продолжали сидеть на корточках, храня зловещее молчание.
Nor did the cub move.	Не двигался и волчонок.
