So the Elephant’s Child went home across Africa (и Слоненок пошел домой через Африку) frisking and whisking his trunk (взмахивая и помахивая = обмахиваясь и отмахиваясь своим хоботом; to frisk — махать /веером/; to whisk — смахивать, отгонять /напр. мух хвостом/). When he wanted fruit to eat (когда он хотел поесть фруктов) he pulled fruit down from a tree (он срывал фрукты/плоды с дерева), instead of waiting for it to fall (вместо того, чтобы ждать, пока они упадут) as he used to do (как он делал это раньше; used to do — бывало / раньше делал). When he wanted grass (когда он хотел травы) he plucked grass up from the ground (он срывал траву с земли, не нагибаясь; up — стоя, в вертикальном положении, в верхнем положении), instead of going on his knees (вместо того, чтобы становиться на колени) as he used to do (как он делал это раньше). When the flies bit him (когда его кусали мухи; to bite — кусать) he broke off the branch of a tree and used it as a fly-whisk (он отламывал ветку /с/ дерева и использовал ее как мухобойку; to break off — отламывать); and he made himself a new, cool, slushy-squshy mud-cap (и он делал себе новую прохладную мякотно-слякотную шапочку из ила; slushy — покрытый грязью, слякотный; squashy — мягкий, мясистый; сочный) whenever the sun was hot (всякий раз, как было жаркое солнце). When he felt lonely walking through Africa (когда он чувствовал себя одиноко, идя через = по Африке) he sang to himself down his trunk (он пел себе через хобот = дудя в хобот), and the noise was louder than several brass bands (и этот звук был громче, чем несколько = нескольких духовых оркестров).

The rest of the time he picked up the melon rinds (в остальное время он подбирал дынную кожуру) that he had dropped on his way to the Limpopo (которую он набросал на пути к Лимпопо) — for he was a Tidy Pachyderm (ибо он был Чистоплотным Толстокожим Животным; pachyderm — толстокожее животное).
