Looking down, Conan vented a gusty sigh of relief. He believed he could negotiate the descent, even though burdened with the jewels and the girl; although he doubted if even he, unburdened, could have ascended at that spot. He set the chest, still smeared with Gorulga's blood and clotted with his brains, on the ledge, and was about to remove his girdle in order to tie the box to his back, when he was galvanized by a sound behind him, a sound sinister and unmistakable.

"Stay here (оставайся здесь)!" he snapped at the bewildered Corinthian girl (рявкнул он на приведенную в замешательство коринфскую девушку; to snap at — грубить кому-л., наорать на кого-л.;to bewilder — смущать; сбивать с толку, приводить в замешательство). "Don't move (не двигайся)!" And drawing his sword, he glided into the tunnel (и обнажив меч, он скользнул в туннель; to draw — рисовать; обнажать /меч/), glaring back into the cavern (заглядывая обратно в пещеру).

Half-way across the upper span he saw a gray deformed shape (на середине верхнего пролета моста он увидел серую уродливую фигуру; half-way — находящийся на равном расстоянии между двумя точками; на полпути). One of the servants of Bit-Yakin was on his trail (один из слуг Бит-Якина шел по их следу; on smb.'s trail — по чьему-л. следу). There was no doubt that the brute had seen them and was following them (несомненно, что зверюга увидела их и идет за ними). Conan did not hesitate (Конан не колебался). It might be easier to defend the mouth of the tunnel (возможно, было бы легче защищать вход в туннель) — but this fight must be finished quickly (но эта схватку нужно /было/ закончить быстро), before the other servants could return (прежде чем смогли бы вернуться остальные прислужники).

bewilder [b'wld], easy ['i:z], defend [d'fend]

Conan did not hesitate. It might be easier to defend the mouth of the tunnel — but this fight must be finished quickly, before the other servants could return.

He ran out on the span (он выбежал на пролет моста), straight toward the oncoming monster (прямо к надвигающемуся чудовищу). It was no ape, neither was it a man (это была ни обезьяна, ни человек). It was some shambling horror spawned in the mysterious, nameless jungles of the south (это был какой-то шаркающий ногами кошмар, рожденный в загадочных, неведомых джунглях юга; to spawn — метать икру; рождать; nameless — безымянный; неизвестный), where strange life teemed in the reeking rot without the dominance of man (где в зловонных испарениях гнили кишела чуждая жизнь без господства человека; to reek — излучать неприятный запах; вонять; rot — гниение, разложение; гниль), and drums thundered in temples that had never known the tread of a human foot (а в храмах, которые никогда не знали поступи человеческой ноги = в которые никогда не ступала нога человека, гремели барабаны). How the ancient Pelishti had gained lordship over them (как древний пелиштиец приобрел власть над ними) — and with it eternal exile from humanity (а с ней вечное изгнание от человечества) — was a foul riddle about which Conan did not care to speculate (было грязной загадкой, о которой Конан не желал размышлять; to care — беспокоиться; иметь желание), even if he had had opportunity (даже если бы ему представилась возможность: «даже если бы он получил возможность»).

eternal ['t:nl], exile ['eksal], opportunity [p'tju:nt]
