It was quite dark, and after the driver had turned off the headlights I could make out only the vague contour of the building.A young woman, a Mexican, judging by her speech inflection, was yelling at a dog to make him stop barking. We got out of the truck and walked into the house.	Мы вылезли из машины и пошли к дому.
The men mumbled "Buenas noches" as they went by her. She answered back and went on yelling at the dog.	Мужчины вполголоса поздоровались с мексиканкой и вошли внутрь дома, а она все пыталась криком унять собаку.
The room was large and was stacked up with a multitude of objects.	Комната была просторная и заставленная множеством вещей.
A dim light from a very small electric bulb rendered the scene quite gloomy.	Тусклый свет очень маленькой электрической лампочки делал сцену достаточно мрачной.
There were quite a few chairs with broken legs and sagging seats leaning against the walls.	У стены стояло несколько стульев со сломанными ножками и продавленными сиденьями.
Three of the men sat down on a couch, which was the largest single piece of furniture in the room.	Трое индейцев уселись на кушетку, которая была самым большим предметом из мебели в комнате.
It was very old and had sagged down all the way to the floor; in the dim light it seemed to be red and dirty.	Она была очень старой, продавленной до пола и в тусклом свете казалась красной и грязной.
The rest of us sat in chairs.	Остальным достались стулья.
We sat in silence for a long time.	Долгое время мы сидели молча.
One of the men suddenly got up and went into another room.	Вдруг один из мужчин встал и вышел в соседнюю комнату.
He was perhaps in his fifties, tall, and husky.	Это был индеец лет пятидесяти, высокий, крепкий и смуглый.
He came back a moment later with a coffee jar.	Через минуту он вернулся с жестянкой из-под кофе.
He opened the lid and handed the jar to me; inside there were seven odd-looking items.	Он снял крышку и вручил банку мне.
They varied in size and consistency. Some of them were almost round, others were elongated.	В ней было семь каких-то странных предметов, разных по плотности и размеру - одни почти круглые, другие продолговатые.
They felt to the touch like the pulp of walnuts, or the surface of cork. Their brownish color made them look like hard, dry nutshells.	На ощупь они напоминали ядро грецкого ореха или поверхность пробки, на вид - коричневатую ореховую скорлупу.
I handled them, rubbing their surfaces for quite some time.	Довольно долго я вертел их в руках, потирая и поглаживая.
"This is to be chewed [esto se masca]," Don Juan said in a whisper.	- Это жуют [esto se masca], - сказал дон Хуан шепотом.
I had not realized that he had sat next to me until he spoke.	До этого я не замечал, что он сидит рядом.
I looked at the other men, but no one was looking at me; they were talking among themselves in very low voices.	Я взглянул на остальных, но никто не смотрел в мою сторону, они о чем-то очень тихо переговаривались.
