This was a moment of acute indecision and fear.	Тут меня охватила острая нерешительность и страх.
I felt almost unable to control myself.	Я почти потерял над собой контроль.
"I have to go to the bathroom," I said to him.	- Мне нужно выйти в туалет, - сказал я дону Хуану.
"I'll go outside and take a walk."	- Я немного пройдусь.
He handed me the coffee jar and I put the peyote buttons in it.	Он протянул мне банку, и я положил бутоны[6] пейота обратно.
I was leaving the room when the man who hid given me the jar stood up, came to me, and said he had a toilet bowl in the other room.	Я направился к двери, когда мужчина, вручивший мне банку, встал, подошел ко мне и сказал, что туалет в соседней комнате.
The toilet was almost against the door.	Дверь туалета оказалась почти напротив.
Next to it, nearly touching the toilet, was a large bed which occupied more than half of the room.	Рядом, вплотную к двери, стояла большая кровать, занимавшая больше половины комнаты.
The woman was sleeping there.	На ней спала женщина.
I stood motionless at the door for a while, then I came back to the room where the other men were.	Я постоял у двери, а потом вернулся.
The man who owned the house spoke to me in English:	Хозяин дома обратился ко мне по-английски.
"Don Juan says you're from South America.	- Дон Хуан говорит, что ты из Южной Америки.
Is there any mescal there?"	Есть там какой-нибудь мескал?
I told him that I had never even heard of it.	Я сказал, что никогда даже не слышал об этом.
They seemed to be interested in South America and we talked about the Indians for a while.	Их вроде заинтересовала тема Южной Америки, и мы немного поговорили об индейцах.
Then one of the men asked me why I wanted to eat peyote.	Потом один из них спросил, зачем я собираюсь есть пейот.
I told him that I waited to know what it was like.	Я ответил - хотелось бы знать, что это такое.
They all laughed shyly.	Они сдержанно засмеялись.
Don Juan urged me softly,	Дон Хуан мягко подтолкнул меня:
"Chew it, chew it [Masca, masca]."	"Давай жуй, жуй" [masca, masca].
My hands were wet and my stomach contracted.	Ладони у меня вспотели, живот сжался.
The jar with the peyote buttons was on the floor by the chair.	Банка с бутонами пейота стояла на полу возле стула.
I bent over, took one at random, and put it in my mouth.	Я нагнулся, взял первый попавшийся и положил в рот.
It had a stale taste.	Привкус был затхлый.
I bit it in two and started to chew one of the pieces.	Я раскусил его надвое и начал жевать одну половину.
I felt a strong, pungent bitterness; in a moment my whole mouth was numb.	Рот наполнился сильной едкой горечью и моментально онемел.
