They wore NASA photo IDs around their necks.	У всех на шее висели карточки.
Gabrielle quickly bent over the fountain, watching behind her.	Гэбриэл быстро склонилась над фонтанчиком, глядя назад.
A pimple-faced man inserted his ID into the slot and opened the elevator.	Прыщавый парень вставил в щель карточку, и двери лифта тут же открылись.
He was laughing, shaking his head in amazement.	Парень смеялся, в восторге качая головой.
"The guys in SETI must be going nuts!" he said as everyone boarded the elevator. "Their horn carts traced drift fields under two hundred milliJanskys for twenty years, and the physical proof was buried in the ice here on earth the whole time!"	- А доказательства, - разглагольствовал он, -оказывается, все это время таились здесь, зажатые во льду!
The elevator doors closed, and the men disappeared.	Двери закрылись, и компания исчезла.
Gabrielle stood up, wiping her mouth, wondering what to do.	Гэбриэл выпрямилась, вытирая губы и раздумывая, что делать.
She looked around for an interoffice phone.	Оглянулась в поисках внутреннего телефона.
Nothing.	Ничего похожего.
She wondered if she could somehow steal a key card, but something told her that was probably unwise.	Украсть карточку?..
Whatever she did, she knew she had to do it fast.	Как бы то ни было, действовать надо оперативно, как можно быстрее.
She could now see the woman she'd first spoken to out in the lobby, moving through the crowd with a NASA security officer.	Она увидела ту самую бдительную особу, которая узнала ее, идущую по холлу с охранником.
A trim, bald man came around the corner, hustling toward the elevators.	Из-за угла появился худой лысый человек, спешащий к лифту.
Gabrielle again bent over the fountain.	Гэбриэл снова нагнулась над фонтанчиком.
The man did not seem to notice her.	Казалось, человек не обращает на нее никакого внимания.
Gabrielle watched in silence as the man leaned forward and inserted his ID card into the slit.	Молча Гэбриэл наблюдала, как он вставил в щель карточку.
Another set of elevator doors slid open, and the man stepped on.	Открылись двери другого лифта, и мужчина вошел.
Screw it, Gabrielle thought, making up her mind.	"К черту все! - решила Гэбриэл.

As the elevator slid closed, Gabrielle spun from the fountain and ran over, sticking her hand out and catching the door.	Она отскочила от фонтанчика и бросилась к лифту, выставив вперед руку, чтобы задержать двери.
The doors bounced back open, and she stepped in, her face bright with excitement.	Они снова разъехались, и Гэбриэл впрыгнула в лифт. Лицо ее горело от возбуждения.
