Emerging presently into a twisting corridor, he took the first doorway he came to. He had a twofold purpose in his apparently aimless prowling; to escape from the building and its mysteries, and to find the Nemedian girl who, he felt, was imprisoned somewhere in this palace, temple, or whatever it was. He believed it was the great domed edifice at the center of the city, and it was likely that here dwelt the ruler of the town, to whom a captive woman would doubtless be brought.

He found himself in a chamber (он оказался в комнате; to find oneself — оказаться, очутиться), not another corridor (а не в другом коридоре), and was about to retrace his steps (и уже собирался вернуться по своим следам; to be about to inf. — собираться что-л. сделать;to retrace one's steps — возвращаться по своим следам), when he heard a voice which came from behind one of the walls (когда он услышал голос, который доносился из-за одной из стен; to come — приходить; доноситься). There was no door in that wall (в этой стене не было двери), but he leaned close and heard distinctly (но он наклонился поближе и слышал четко). And an icy chill crawled slowly along his spine (и ледяной озноб медленно пополз у него по позвоночнику = по спине). The tongue was Nemedian (язык был немедийский), but the voice was not human (но голос был не человеческий). There was a terrifying resonance about it (в нем был вселяющий страх резонанс), like a bell tolling at midnight (как у колокола, бьющего в полночь).

crawl [kr:l], terrify ['terfa], resonance ['reznns]

"There was no life in the Abyss (в первозданном Хаосе не было жизни; abyss — бездна; первичный, первозданный хаос), save that which was incorporated in me (кроме той, которая была заключена во мне; to incorporate — соединяться; заключать)," it tolled (мерно гремел он; to toll — звонить в колокол /ударяя медленно и мерно/). "Nor was there light (там не было ни света), nor motion (ни движения), nor any sound (ни какого-либо звука). Only the urge behind and beyond life guided and impelled me on my upward journey, blind, insensate, inexorable (лишь сильное желание жизни по ту сторону ее вело и подталкивало меня в моем путешествии наверх, слепое, неразумное и непоколебимое; behind — за; вслед за; beyond — за, по ту сторону; insensate — неодушевленный; неразумный; бессмысленный). Through ages upon ages (века /шли/ за веками; age — возраст; век; through the ages — сквозь века), and the changeless strata of darkness I climbed (а я поднимался через неизменные слои мрака) —»
