Sola motioned me to be seated upon a pile of silks near the center of the room, and, turning, made a peculiar hissing sound, as though signaling to someone in an adjoining room. In response to her call I obtained my first sight of a new Martian wonder. It waddled in on its ten short legs, and squatted down before the girl like an obedient puppy. The thing was about the size of a Shetland pony, but its head bore a slight resemblance to that of a frog, except that the jaws were equipped with three rows of long, sharp tusks.

CHAPTER V

I ELUDE MY WATCH DOG (я ускользаю от своей сторожевой собаки; to elude — избежать, спастись; избавиться; отделаться/от удара, нападения, опасности, трудности — проворством, ловкостью, хитростью/)

Sola stared into the brute's wicked-looking eyes (Сола посмотрела в злобные глаза животного; looking — компонент сложных слов; wicked-looking — злобный), muttered a word or two of command (пробормотала одно или два слова команды), pointed to me, and left the chamber (указала на меня и покинула комнату). I could not but wonder what this ferocious-looking monstrosity might do (я не мог не задаваться вопросом, что может сделать это свирепое чудовище; to wonder — интересоваться, желать знать) when left alone in such close proximity to such a relatively tender morsel of meat (оставшись наедине в такой непосредственной близости от такого относительно нежного кусочка мяса); but my fears were groundless (но мои страхи были безосновательны), as the beast, after surveying me intently for a moment (так как животное, пристально изучив меня в течение минуты; to survey — рассматривать, изучать), crossed the room to the only exit which led to the street (пересекло комнату и /подошло/ к единственному выходу, который вел на улицу; to lead), and lay down full length across the threshold (и легло, вытянувшись во всю длину, у порога).

This was my first experience with a Martian watch dog (это был мой первый опыт /общения/ с марсианской сторожевой собакой; watch — наблюдение; watchdog — сторожевая собака), but it was destined not to be my last (но, как было суждено, не последний; to destine — предназначать, предопределять), for this fellow guarded me carefully during the time I remained a captive among these green men (так как это создание добросовестно охраняло меня все то время, пока я оставался пленником зеленых людей; to guard — сторожить, охранять), twice saving my life, and never voluntarily being away from me a moment (/оно/ дважды спасало мою жизнь и никогда добровольно не покидало меня: «не было вдали» ни на минуту).
