"I am a friend of the red men of Barsoom and I am starving (я — друг красных людей Барсума, и я умираю от голода). In the name of humanity open to us," I replied (во имя человечности — откройте нам, — ответил я).

starvation [stQ:'veISn], exhaustion [Ig'zO: stS(q)n], follow ['fOlou]

I explained that I had escaped from the Warhoons and was dying of starvation and exhaustion.

"You wear the metal of a green warrior and are followed by a calot, yet you are of the figure of a red man. In color you are neither green nor red. In the name of the ninth day, what manner of creature are you?"

"I am a friend of the red men of Barsoom and I am starving. In the name of humanity open to us," I replied.

Presently the door commenced to recede before me (наконец, дверь начала отодвигаться: «отступать» передо мной; to recede — отступать, пятиться) until it had sunk into the wall fifty feet (пока не углубилась в стену на пятьдесят футов), then it stopped and slid easily to the left (затем она остановилась и легко скользнула влево; to slide — скользить), exposing a short, narrow corridor of concrete (открыв короткий, узкий бетонный коридор), at the further end of which was another door (в дальнем конце которого была другая дверь), similar in every respect to the one I had just passed (во всех отношениях похожая на ту, через которую я только что прошел). No one was in sight (никого не было видно), yet immediately we passed the first door (но как только мы прошли первую дверь) it slid gently into place behind us (она мягко скользнула на свое прежнее место позади нас) and receded rapidly to its original position in the front wall of the building (и быстро вернулась в свое первоначальное положение в передней стене здания). As the door had slipped aside (когда дверь скользнула в сторону) I had noted its great thickness (я отметил ее большую толщину), fully twenty feet (целых двадцать футов), and as it reached its place once more after closing behind us (и когда она вновь вернулась на свое место, закрывшись позади нас), great cylinders of steel had dropped from the ceiling behind it (большие стальные цилиндры опустились с потолка позади нее) and fitted their lower ends into apertures countersunk in the floor (и точно соединились со своими нижними элементами: «концами» в отверстиях, просверленных в полу; to fit in — вставлять на место, пригонять; to sink — тех. бурить; to countersink — зенковать).

recede [rI'si: d], thickness ['TIknIs], cylinder ['sIlIndq], countersink ['kauntqsINk]
