My first thought when the battle was over was for Kantos Kan (моя первая мысль, когда битва была закончена, была о Кантосе Кане), and leaving Dejah Thoris in charge of Tars Tarkas (и, оставив Дежу Торис на попечении Тарса Таркаса) I took a dozen warriors and hastened to the dungeons beneath the palace (я взял дюжину воинов и поспешил к темницам под дворцом). He was overjoyed at seeing me (он был чрезвычайно обрадован, /когда/ увидел меня; to overjoy — очень обрадовать, привести в восторг), and to know the meaning of the fight (и когда понял смысл битвы), faint echoes of which had reached his prison cell (слабое эхо которой доходило до его тюремной камеры). We discovered that it would be futile to attempt to cut away the bars and chains (мы обнаружили, что бесполезно /даже/ пытаться срезать прутья и цепи; futile — бесполезный, тщетный) which held him prisoner (которые держали его в тюрьме: «удерживали пленником»), so, at his suggestion I returned to search the bodies on the floor above (поэтому, по его предложению, я вернулся, чтобы обыскать тела на верхнем этаже) for keys to open the padlocks of his cell and of his chains (/в поисках/ ключей, чтобы открыть замки его камеры и его цепей).
