On this trip I tasted the first meat I had eaten since leaving Earth (во время этого путешествия я впервые попробовал мясо после того, как покинул Землю) — large, juicy steaks and chops (большие и сочные ломти мяса и отбивные; steak — кусок мяса; бифштекс; chop — отбивная котлета) from the well-fed domestic animals of the farms (хорошо откормленных домашних животных с ферм). Every plant and flower and vegetable and animal (каждое растение и цветок, каждый овощ и животное) has been so refined by ages of careful, scientific cultivation and breeding (были так усовершенствованы столетиями тщательного научного разведения и улучшения породы; to refine — вносить улучшения; to breed — вынашивать/детенышей/, высиживать/птенцов/; выводить, разводить /животных/) that the like of them on Earth (что /все/ подобное им на Земле) dwindled into pale, gray, characterless nothingness by comparison (при сравнении становилось бледным, серым, лишенным ярких признаков ничем; to dwindle — сокращаться, уменьшаться, убывать, истощаться; терять значение; ухудшаться, приходить в упадок; вырождаться).

One of the older men had been there on a diplomatic mission several years before (один из людей постарше был там с дипломатической миссией несколько лет тому назад) and spoke with regret of the conditions (и с сожалением говорил об обстоятельствах) which seemed destined ever to keep these two countries at war (которые, казалось, обрекали эти две страны на постоянную войну).
