The tank had been radiation blasted. A few feet from the tank a mummified body lay sprawled out, mouth open.	Рядом с танком лежал похожий на мумию труп с открытым ртом.
Beyond the road was a flat field. Stones and weeds, and bits of broken glass.	За дорогой тянулось ровное поле: камни, сорняки, битое стекло.
"There," Hendricks said.	- Там! - указал Хендрикс.
A stone well jutted up, sagging and broken.	Среди мусора высился каменный колодец с осевшими разбитыми стенками.
A few boards lay across it. Most of the well had sunk into rubble.	Поперек него лежало несколько досок.
Hendricks walked unsteadily toward it, Tasso beside him.	Хендрикс нерешительно подошел к колодцу. Тассо шла следом.
"Are you certain about this?" Tasso said.	- Вы уверены? - спросила она.
"This doesn't look like anything."	- Это не очень похоже на то, что мы ищем.
"I'm sure."	- Уверен.
Hendricks sat down at the edge of the well, his teeth locked.	- Хендрикс, стиснув зубы, устало опустился на край колодца.
His breath came quickly. He wiped perspiration from his face.	Он тяжело дышал.
"This was arranged so the senior command officer could get away.	- Это было сделано на случай крайней опасности.
If anything happened. If the bunker fell."	Например, захват бункера.
"That was you?"	Корабль предназначен для эвакуации старшего офицера. - И этот старший офицер - вы?
"Yes."	- Да
"Where is the ship?	- Но где он?
Is it here?"	Здесь?
"We're standing on it."	- Мы стоим над ним.
Hendricks ran his hands over the surface of the well stones.	- Хендрикс провел рукой по каменной стене.
"The eye-lock responds to me, not to anybody else.	- Кодовый замок отвечает только мне и никому больше.
It's my ship. Or it was supposed to be."	Это мой корабль.
There was a sharp click.	Раздался резкий щелчок.
Presently they heard a low grating sound from below them.	И вскоре из глубины донесся низкий рокочущий звук.
"Step back," Hendricks said.	- Отойдите, - сказал Хендрикс, оттаскивая Тассо от колодца.
He and Tasso moved away from the well. A section of the ground slid back. A metal frame pushed slowly up through the ash, shoving bricks and weeds out of the way.	Широкий пласт земли отошел в сторону, и из пепла, распихивая битый кирпич и прочий мусор, начал медленно подниматься металлический стержень.
