This time I made a strong effort to control myself.	На этот раз я решил сделать серьезное усилие.
I sat down, and then knelt in order to lie face down, but I could not lie in spite of my will.	Я уселся, потом встал на колени, чтобы лечь на живот, но никак не мог этого сделать, несмотря на мое желание.
I put my hands on the floor in front of me.	Я уперся ладонями перед собой в пол веранды.
My breathing accelerated; my stomach was upset.	Дыхание участилось, желудок забунтовал.
I had a clear sensation of panic, and fought not to run away.	Меня охватила неодолимая паника, я изо всех сил боролся с желанием удрать.
I thought don Juan was perhaps watching me.	Тут я вспомнил, что дон Хуан, наверное, за мной наблюдает.
Slowly I crawled back to the other spot and propped my back against the rock.	Я медленно отполз к ботинку и прислонился спиной к валуну.
I wanted to rest for a while to organize my thoughts, but I fell asleep.	Я хотел передохнуть и собраться с мыслями, но заснул.
I heard don Juan talking and laughing above my head. I woke up.	Я услышал над собой голос и смех дона Хуана и проснулся.
"You have found the spot," he said.	- Ты нашел его, - говорил он.
I did not understand him at first, but he assured me again that the place where I had fallen asleep was the spot in question.	Я не сразу понял, и он вновь подтвердил, что мое пятно и есть то самое место, где я заснул.
He again asked me how I felt lying there.	Он опять спросил, как я себя на нем чувствую.
I told him I really did not notice any difference.	Я ответил, что вроде никакой разницы.
He asked me to compare my feelings at that moment with what I had felt while lying on the other spot.	Он предложил мне сравнить свои нынешние ощущения с тем, что я испытывал на прежнем пятне.
For the first time it occurred to me that I could not possibly explain my apprehension of the preceding night.	Впервые до меня дошло, что я, явно не смогу объяснить опасение, охватившее меня этой ночью.
He urged me in a kind of challenging way to sit on the other spot.	Он с вызовом приказал мне сесть на прежнее пятно.
For some inexplicable reason I was actually afraid of the other place, and did not sit on it.	Но это место по какой-то необъяснимой причине наводило на меня страх, и я решительно отказался.
He asserted that only a fool could fail to see the difference.	Он заключил, что только дурак не увидит разницы.
I asked him if each of the two spots had a special name.	Я спросил, имеется ли у этих двух пятен название.
He said that the good one was called the sitio and the bad one the enemy; he said these two places were the key to a man's wellbeing, especially for a man who was pursuing knowledge.	Хорошее пятно, сказал он, называется "sitio" [4], плохое - "врагом". Эти два пятна - ключ к благополучию человека, в особенности того, кто ищет знание.
