Каифа вежливо извинился и объяснил, что сделать этого не может в канун праздника. Пилат накинул капюшон на свою чуть лысеющую голову и начал разговор. Разговор этот шел по-гречески.	Kaifa politely apologized[26 ]and explained that he could not do that on the eve of the feast. Pilate covered his slightly balding head with a hood and began the conversation. This conversation took place in Greek.
Пилат сказал, что он разобрал дело Иешуа Га-Ноцри и утвердил смертный приговор.	Pilate said that he had looked into the case of Yeshua Ha-Nozri and confirmed the death sentence.
Таким образом, к смертной казни, которая должна совершиться сегодня, приговорены трое разбойников: Дисмас, Гестас, Вар-равван и, кроме того, этот Иешуа Га-Ноцри. Первые двое, вздумавшие подбивать народ на бунт против кесаря, взяты с боем римскою властью, числятся за прокуратором, и, следовательно, о них здесь речь идти не будет. Последние же, Вар-равван и Га-Ноцри, схвачены местной властью и осуждены Синедрионом. Согласно закону, согласно обычаю, одного из этих двух преступников нужно будет отпустить на свободу в честь наступающего сегодня великого праздника пасхи.	Thus, three robbers - Dysmas, Gestas and Bar-Rabban - and this Yeshua Ha-Nozri besides, were condemned to be executed, and it was to be done that day. The first two, who had ventured to incite the people to rebel against Caesar, had been taken in armed struggle by the Roman authorities, were accounted to the procurator, and, consequently, would not be talked about here. But the second two, Bar-Rabban and Ha-Nozri, had been seized by the local authorities and condemned by the Sanhedrin. According to the law, according to custom, one of these two criminals had to be released in honour of the great feast of Passover, which would begin that day.
Итак, прокуратор желает знать, кого из двух преступников намерен освободить Синедрион: Вар-раввана или Га-Ноцри?	And so the procurator wished to know which of the two criminals the Sanhedrin intended to set free: Bar-Rabban or Ha-Nozri?[27]
Каифа склонил голову в знак того, что вопрос ему ясен, и ответил:	Kaifa inclined his head to signify that the question was clear to him, and replied:
- Синедрион просит отпустить Вар-раввана.	'The Sanhedrin asks that Bar-Rabban be released.'
Прокуратор хорошо знал, что именно так ему ответит первосвященник, но задача его заключалась в том, чтобы показать, что такой ответ вызывает его изумление.	The procurator knew very well that the high priest would give precisely that answer, but his task consisted in showing that this answer provoked his astonishment.
Пилат это и сделал с большим искусством. Брови на надменном лице поднялись, прокуратор прямо в глаза поглядел первосвященнику с изумлением.	This Pilate did with great artfulness. The eyebrows on the arrogant face rose, the procurator looked with amazement straight into the high priest's eyes.
- Признаюсь, этот ответ меня удивил, -мягко заговорил прокуратор, - боюсь, нет ли здесь недоразумения.	'I confess, this answer stuns me,' the procurator began softly, 'I'm afraid there may be some misunderstanding here.'
