Jamie stepped into a small room that contained nothing except a large galvanized-iron bathtub in the center and a few pegs on the wall.	Джейми очутился в маленькой комнатушке, где не было ничего, кроме большой металлической ванны и нескольких колышков на стене.
The attendant began filling the tub from a large wooden bucket.	Служитель опорожнил в ванну огромную деревянную лохань.

Jamie waited until the attendant left and then undressed.	Подождав, пока он выйдет, Джейми разделся.
He looked down at his grime-covered body and put one foot in the tub.	Оглядев серое от грязи тело, опустил ногу в ванну.
The water was cold, as advertised.	Холодная!
He gritted his teeth and plunged in, soaping himself furiously from head to foot.	Сжав зубы, юноша плюхнулся в воду, старательно намыливаясь с головы до ног.
When he finally stepped out of the tub, the water was black.	Когда он наконец ступил на пол, вода в ванне почернела.
He dried himself as best he could with the worn linen towel and started to get dressed.	Джейми вытерся, как мог, тоненьким матерчатым полотенцем и начал одеваться.
His pants and shirt were stiff with dirt, and he hated to put them back on.	Брюки и рубашка задубели от грязи. Он с отвращением натянул пропахшую потом одежду.

Jamie left the bathhouse and pushed his way down the crowded street to a saloon called the Sundowner. He, ordered a beer and lunch. Lamb cutlets with tomatoes, and sausage and potato salad and pickles.	Выйдя из бани, Джейми, с трудом пробравшись через толпу, очутился у салуна "Сандаунер" и заказал пиво, бараньи котлеты с помидорами, колбасу, картофельный салат и пикули.
While he ate, he listened to the hopeful conversations around him.	Жадно поглощая еду, он прислушивался к обрывкам разговоров.
"... I hear they found a stone near Colesberg weigbin' twenty-one carats.	- ...Я слышал, недалеко от Колсберга нашли камешек в двадцать два карата.
Mark you, if there's one diamond up there, there's plenty more. ..."	Заметь, если там нашли алмаз, значит, можно отыскать еще кучу...
"... There's a new diamond find up in Hebron.	- ...В Хеброне обнаружили залежи.
I'm thinkin' of goin' there...."	Я сам подумываю туда отправиться...
"You're a fool.	- Ты дурак!

At the bar, a bearded customer in a collarless, striped-flannel shirt and corduroy trousers was nursing a shandygaff in a large glass.	У стойки бара бородатый посетитель во фланелевой полосатой рубашке без воротника и вельветовых брюках задумчиво вертел в руках большой стакан со спиртным.
"I got cleaned out in Hebron," he confided to the bartender. "I need me a grubstake."	- Совсем разорился в Хеброне, - признался он бармену. - Нужно срочно отыскать камешки.
