Читаем Английский язык с Э. Р. Берроузом. Принцесса Марса полностью

Sola, who had accompanied the searching party of her own volition, was the only one of the Martians whose face had not been twisted in laughter as I battled for my life. She, on the contrary, was sober with apparent solicitude and, as soon as I had finished the monster, rushed to me and carefully examined my body for possible wounds or injuries. Satisfying herself that I had come off unscathed she smiled quietly, and, taking my hand, started toward the door of the chamber.

Tars Tarkas and the other warriors had entered (Тарс Таркас и другие воины вошли) and were standing over the now rapidly reviving brute which had saved my life (и стояли над теперь быстро приходившим в себя животным, которое спасло мою жизнь; to revive — возрождаться, приходить в себя), and whose life I, in turn, had rescued (и чью жизнь, в свою очередь, спас я). They seemed to be deep in argument (казалось, они были поглощены спором; deep in — погруженный, увлеченный), and finally one of them addressed me (и, наконец, один из них обратился ко мне), but remembering my ignorance of his language turned back to Tars Tarkas (но, вспомнив о моем незнании их языка, снова повернулся к Тарсу Таркасу), who, with a word and gesture (который одним словом и жестом), gave some command to the fellow and turned to follow us from the room (отдал какой-то приказ воину и повернулся, чтобы следом за нами выйти из комнаты).

revive [rI'vaIv], argument ['Q: gjumqnt], ignorance ['Ignqrqns]

Tars Tarkas and the other warriors had entered and were standing over the now rapidly reviving brute which had saved my life, and whose life I, in turn, had rescued. They seemed to be deep in argument, and finally one of them addressed me, but remembering my ignorance of his language turned back to Tars Tarkas, who, with a word and gesture, gave some command to the fellow and turned to follow us from the room.

There seemed something menacing in their attitude toward my beast (казалось, что в их отношении к моему животному было что-то угрожающее; to menace — угрожать, грозить), and I hesitated to leave until I had learned the outcome (и я не решался уйти, пока не выясню исход дела; outcome — результат, последствие). It was well I did so (и хорошо, что я поступил так), for the warrior drew an evil looking pistol from its holster (так как воин вытащил зловещего вида пистолет из кобуры) and was on the point of putting an end to the creature (и уже хотел прикончить животное; end — конец; смерть, кончина) when I sprang forward and struck up his arm (когда я прыгнул вперед и ударил его по руке; to be on the point of — собираться немедленно сделать). The bullet striking the wooden casing of the window exploded (пуля, ударившись о деревянную раму окна, взорвалась), blowing a hole completely through the wood and masonry (полностью пробив дыру через дерево и каменную кладку; to blow — дуть; взрывать).

outcome ['autkAm], menacing ['menIsIN], completely [kqm'pli: tlI], masonry ['meIs(q)nrI]

There seemed something menacing in their attitude toward my beast, and I hesitated to leave until I had learned the outcome. It was well I did so, for the warrior drew an evil looking pistol from its holster and was on the point of putting an end to the creature when I sprang forward and struck up his arm. The bullet striking the wooden casing of the window exploded, blowing a hole completely through the wood and masonry.
