“Five hours march, I should think. It will be rough going. The road from the Gate along the left edge of the stream seems all broken up. But look down there! The river loops suddenly east across Dale in front of the ruined town. At that point there was once a bridge, leading to steep stairs that climbed up the right bank, and so to a road running towards Ravenhill. There is (or was) a path that left the road and climbed up to the post. A hard climb, too, even if the old steps are still there. ”

“Dear me!” grumbled the hobbit. “More walking and more climbing without breakfast! I wonder how many breakfasts, and other meals, we have missed inside that nasty clockless, timeless hole?”

As a matter of fact (фактически = на самом деле) two nights and the day between had gone by (две ночи и день между /ними/ прошли) (and not altogether without food (и не то чтобы совсем без пищи)) since the dragon smashed the magic door (с тех пор, как дракон разнес волшебную дверь; to smash — наносить сильный удар, разбивать вдребезги), but Bilbo had quite lost count (но Бильбо совершенно потерял счет /времени/), and it might have been one night (и могла бы быть = может быть, прошла одна ночь) or a week of nights (или целая неделя ночей) for all he could tell (вот все, что он мог сказать).

“Come (ну же), come!” said Thorin laughing (сказал Торин, смеясь) — his spirits had begun to rise again (его настроение снова начало подниматься), and he rattled the precious stones in his pockets (и он бряцал драгоценными камнями в свих карманах; to rattle — трещать, грохотать, бренчать, бряцать). “Don’t call my place a nasty hole (не называйте мой дом отвратительной дырой; place — место; город; имение, дом, жилище)! You wait till it has been cleaned and redecorated (/вы/ подождите до тех пор, пока он не будет вычищен и вновь украшен; to decorate — украшать, убирать, декорировать)!”

“That won’t be till Smaug’s dead (этого не случится до смерти Смауга: «пока Смауг не будет мертв»; dead — мертвый), ” said Bilbo glumly (сказал Бильбо хмуро). “In the meanwhile where is he (а тем временем, где он)? I would give a good breakfast to know (я бы отдал хороший завтрак, лишь бы знать). I hope he is not up on the Mountain (я надеюсь, что он не на вершине Горы) looking down at us (смотрящий вниз на нас)!”

That idea disturbed the dwarves mightily (эта мысль чрезвычайно встревожила гномов; to disturb — волновать, тревожить), and they quickly decided (и они быстро решили) that Bilbo and Balin were right (что Бильбо и Балин правы).

“We must move away from here (мы должны уйти: «двинуться прочь» отсюда), ” said Dori. “I feel (я чувствую себя так) as if his eyes were on the back of my head (словно его взгляд у меня на затылке). ”
