“Tha’lt rouse thysen up a bit again now, Maggie,” the father-in-law said (теперь ты снова немножко встряхнешься, Мэгги, – сказал свекор; Tha’lt rouse thysen up = You will rouse yourself up) – and then to me (а потом мне): “’Er’s not bin very bright sin’ Alfred come whoam, an’ the bod flyed awee (= She`s not been very bright since Alfred came home, and the bird flew away – она не очень-то весела с тех пор, как Альфред приехал домой, еще и птица улетела; bright – яркий; блестящий; веселый, радостный).

 “Shall you come in a minute, Master?” said the elderly woman, to me.

“Ay, come in an’ ha’e a cup o’ tea or summat. You’ll do wi’ summat, carryin’ that bod. Come on, Maggie wench, let’s go in.”

’E come whoam a Wednesday night, Alfred did (= He came home on Wednesday night – он приехал в среду вечером, Альфред-то; night – ночь; вечер). But ay, you knowed, didna yer (= But yes, you knew, didn`t you – ах да, вы знали, не так ли). Ay, ’e comed ’a Wednesday (= Yes, he came on Wednesday – да, приехал он в среду) – an’ I reckon there wor a bit of a to-do between ’em, worn’t there, Maggie (= and I reckon there was a bit of a to-do between them, wasn’t there, Maggie – и, полагаю, между ними случилась небольшая размолвка, так ведь, Мэгги; to-do – /разг./ суматоха, суета, шум; ссора)?”

He twinkled maliciously to his daughter-in-law (он ехидно подмигнул невестке; maliciously – злобно, со злобой), who was flushed brilliant and handsome (которая вспыхнула, сверкающая и красивая).

“Oh, be quiet, father (ох, помолчите, отец).
