This at once made him look different from the rest of the prisoners, whose hair is close-cropped, but cropped so badly, in ridges, that it gives them a sinister look. The commandant spoke to him of some official business, and then as we were leaving added in a friendly way:
"I see your hair is growing well."

"It’ll be some time yet before I get it right again."
The commandant dismissed him and we went on.
"He’s a very decent fellow," he said. "He’s in the accountant’s department, and he’s had leave to let his hair grow. He’s delighted."
