The first thing I noticed about him (первое, на что я обратил внимание, /взглянув/ на него) was that he had a fine head of long, naturally-waving dark brown hair (так это на прекрасную копну длинных, вьющихся от природы темно-каштановых волос; a head of hair — шапка, копнаволос; to wave — развеваться/офлаге/;виться/оволосах/; brown — коричневый, бурый). The commandant dismissed him and we went on (начальник тюрьмы отпустил его, и мы продолжили путь).

"He’s a very decent fellow (он очень порядочный человек)," he said. "He’s in the accountant’s department (он работает в бухгалтерии; accountant — бухгалтер; department — отдел), and he’s had leave to let his hair grow (и он получил разрешение отрастить волосы). He’s delighted (он очень доволен)."

"What is he here for (за что он здесь)?" I asked.

"He killed his wife (он убил свою жену). But he’s only got six years (но он получил всего шесть лет). He’s clever and a good worker (он умен и хороший работник).
