On regaining the plaza I had my third glimpse of the captive girl. She was standing with her guards before the entrance to the audience chamber, and as I approached she gave me one haughty glance and turned her back full upon me. The act was so womanly, so earthly womanly, that though it stung my pride it also warmed my heart with a feeling of companionship; it was good to know that someone else on Mars beside myself had human instincts of a civilized order, even though the manifestation of them was so painful and mortifying.
Had a green Martian woman desired to show dislike or contempt (если бы зеленая марсианская женщина хотела показать свою неприязнь или презрение; dislike — нерасположение, неприязнь), she would, in all likelihood, have done it with a sword thrust (она, по всей вероятности, сделала бы это ударом меча; likelihood — вероятность; in all likelihood — по всей вероятности; thrust — толчок; колющий удар, выпад) or a movement of her trigger finger (или нажатием пальца на спусковой курок: «движением указательного пальца»; trigger — спусковой крючок; trigger finger — указательный палец) but as their sentiments are mostly atrophied (но так как их чувства в большой степени атрофированы) it would have required a serious injury (то понадобилось бы серьезное оскорбление; injury — повреждение; обида, оскорбление) to have aroused such passions in them (чтобы вызвать у них такой взрыв чувств; passion — страсть, взрыв чувств). Sola, let me add, was an exception (Сола, позвольте мне добавить, была исключением); I never saw her perform a cruel or uncouth act (я никогда не видел, чтобы она совершала жестокий или грубый поступок; uncouth — неуклюжий; грубый), or fail in uniform kindliness and good nature (или не проявляла бы постоянную доброту и благожелательность; to fail in — иметь недостаток в; uniform — постоянный, ровный). She was indeed, as her fellow Martians had said of her, an atavism (она в самом деле была, как говорили о ней ее соплеменники марсиане, атавизмом); a dear and precious reversion to a former type of loved and loving ancestor (милым и драгоценным возвратом к прежнему виду любимых и любящих предков; reversion — изменение порядка; возвращение к прежнему состоянию).
