I went out into the hall, and, without a thought in my head, stood and looked out at the pond and the village, and still I heard:	Я вышел в переднюю и, ни о чем не думая, стоял и смотрел оттуда на пруд и на деревню, а до меня доносилось:
"A piece of cheese.... To the crow somewhere God sent a piece of cheese."	-Кусочек сыру... Вороне где-то бог послал кусочек сыру...
And I left the house by the way I had come the first time, only reversing the order, from the yard into the garden, past the house, then along the lime-walk. Here a boy overtook me and handed me a note:	И я ушел из усадьбы тою же дорогой, какой пришел сюда в первый раз, только в обратном порядке: сначала со двора в сад, мимо дома, потом по липовой аллее... Тут догнал меня мальчишка и подал записку.

Then through the fir avenue and the rotten fence. ...Over the fields where the corn was ripening and the quails screamed, cows and shackled horses now were browsing.	Потом темная еловая аллея, обвалившаяся изгородь... На том ноле, где тогда цвела рожь и кричали перепела, теперь бродили коровы и спутанные лошади.
Here and there on the hills the winter corn was already showing green.	Кое-где на холмах ярко зеленела озимь.
A sober, workaday mood possessed me and I was ashamed of all I had said at the Volchaninovs', and once more it became tedious to go on living.	Трезвое, будничное настроение овладело мной, и мне стало стыдно всего, что я говорил у Волчаниновых, и по-прежнему стало скучно жить.
I went home, packed my things, and left that evening for Petersburg. ** *	Придя домой, я уложился и вечером уехал в Петербург.
I never saw the Volchaninovs again.	Больше я уже не видел Волчаниновых.
Lately on my way to the Crimea I met Bielokurov at a station.	Как-то недавно, едучи в Крым, я встретил в вагоне Белокурова.
