Pronunciation GuideA Brief Introduction

This Guide to Pronunciation of Names and Words contains words from The Urantia Book, many of which cannot be found in dictionaries or other sources. It describes the pronunciation of the listed words the way they should be pronounced in accordance with the American variant of the English language.

There are two columns of symbols after the listed words:

The first column provides the American Standard symbols. These are taken from the pronunciation key in Webster's Third International Dictionary, and can also be found in other English language dictionaries.

The second column provides the International Phonetic Alphabet symbols which are used for the description and transcription of sounds in all languages, and are recommended by the International Phonetic Association.

We have utilized these two sets of symbols and, for the convenience of readers who are not familiar with either set of symbols, we have provided a "Pronunciation Key" that will give you examples of the sound for each symbol used in this guide. With these options, this guide will be useful for peoples of all languages and regions. Pronunciation Key American
