Pyotr Petrovitch began getting up from his chair.	Петр Петрович начал вставать со стула.
"One of her customers must have killed her," Zossimov declared positively.	- Убил непременно закладчик! - утвердительно говорил Зосимов.
"Not a doubt of it," replied Razumihin.	- Непременно закладчик! - поддакнул Разумихин.
"Porfiry doesn't give his opinion, but is examining all who have left pledges with her there."	- Порфирий своих мыслей не выдает, а закладчиков все-таки допрашивает...
"Examining them?" Raskolnikov asked aloud.	- Закладчиков допрашивает? - громко спросил Раскольников.
"Yes. What then?"	- Да, а что?
"Nothing."	- Ничего.
"How does he get hold of them?" asked Zossimov.	- Откуда он их берет? - спросил Зосимов.
"Koch has given the names of some of them, other names are on the wrappers of the pledges and some have come forward of themselves."	- Иных Кох указал; других имена были на обертках вещей записаны, а иные и сами пришли, как прослышали...
"It must have been a cunning and practised ruffian!	- Ну ловкая же и опытная, должно быть, каналья!
The boldness of it!	Какая смелость!
The coolness!"	Какая решимость!
"That's just what it wasn't!" interposed Razumihin.	- Вот то-то и есть, что нет! - прервал Разумихин.
"That's what throws you all off the scent.	- Это-то вас всех и сбивает с пути.
But I maintain that he is not cunning, not practised, and probably this was his first crime!	А я говорю - неловкий, неопытный и, наверно, это был первый шаг!
The supposition that it was a calculated crime and a cunning criminal doesn't work.	Предположи расчет и ловкую каналью, и выйдет невероятно.
Suppose him to have been inexperienced, and it's clear that it was only a chance that saved him--and chance may do anything.	Предположи же неопытного, и выйдет, что один только случай его из беды и вынес, а случай чего не делает?
Why, he did not foresee obstacles, perhaps!	Помилуй, да он и препятствий-то, может быть не предвидел!
And how did he set to work? He took jewels worth ten or twenty roubles, stuffing his pockets with them, ransacked the old woman's trunks, her rags--and they found fifteen hundred roubles, besides notes, in a box in the top drawer of the chest!	А как дело ведет? - берет десяти-двадцатирублевые вещи, набивает ими карман, роется в бабьей укладке, в тряпье, - а в комоде в верхнем ящике, в шкатулке, одних чистых денег на полторы тысячи нашли, кроме билетов!
He did not know how to rob; he could only murder.	И ограбить-то не умел, только и сумел, что убить!
It was his first crime, I assure you, his first crime; he lost his head.	Первый шаг, говорю тебе, первый шаг; потерялся!
And he got off more by luck than good counsel!"	И не расчетом, а случаем вывернулся!
