We have seen (мы видели; to see — видеть) that this massed array of peeresses (что это великое множество знатных дам) is sown thick with diamonds (усеяно густо бриллиантами; to sow — сеять), and we also see (и мы также видим) that it is a marvelous spectacle (что это прекрасное зрелище) — but now we are about (но теперь мы около = нам предстоит) to be astonished in earnest (быть пораженными всерьез). About nine (около девяти), the clouds suddenly break away (облака внезапно расходятся) and a shaft of sunshine (и луч солнечного света) cleaves the mellow atmosphere (рассекает жирный = плотный воздух), and drifts slowly (и течет медленно) along the ranks of ladies (вдоль рядов дам); and every rank it touches (и каждый ряд, который он затрагивает) flames into a dazzling splendor of many-colored fires (вспыхивает в ослепительном великолепии разноцветных огней), and we tingle to our finger-tips (и у нас покалывает в кончиках пальцев; tip — кончик) with the electric thrill (электрическим разрядом) that is shot through us (который послан через нас; to shoot — стрелять, посылать) by the surprise and the beauty of the spectacle (удивительностью и красотой этого зрелища)! Presently a special envoy (вскоре специальный посланец) from some distant corner of the Orient (из какого-то дальнего закоулка Востока), marching with the general body (шагая с общей группой) of foreign ambassadors (иностранных послов), crosses this bar of sunshine (пересекает эту полосу солнечного света), and we catch our breath (и мы ловим наше дыхание = затаиваем дыхание), the glory that streams and flashes (великолепие, которое струится и сверкает) and palpitates about him (и подрагивает вокруг него) is so overpowering (так всеобъемлюща); for he is crusted (ибо он покрыт) from head to heels (с головы до пят) with gems (драгоценными камнями), and his slightest movement (и его мельчайшее движение) showers a dancing radiance (изливает танцующее сияние) all around him (вокруг него).

At seven o'clock the first break in the drowsy monotony occurs; for on the stroke of this hour the first peeress enters the transept, clothed like Solomon for splendor, and is conducted to her appointed place by an official clad in satins and velvets, whilst a duplicate of him gathers up the lady's long train, follows after, and, when the lady is seated, arranges the train across her lap for her. He then places her footstool according to her desire, after which he puts her coronet where it will be convenient to her hand when the time for the simultaneous coroneting of the nobles shall arrive.
