As they advanced there were cries of "The woman! The woman! Strike her down; it is her plot. Kill her! Kill her!"

Calling to Dejah Thoris to get behind me I worked my way toward the little doorway back of the throne, but the officers realized my intentions, and three of them sprang in behind me and blocked my chances for gaining a position where I could have defended Dejah Thoris against any army of swordsmen.

The Tharks were having their hands full in the center of the room (тарки были слишком заняты в середине комнаты; to have hands full — хлопот полон рот: «иметь руки полными»), and I began to realize that nothing short of a miracle could save Dejah Thoris and myself (и я начал осознавать, что ничто, кроме чуда, не может спасти Дежу Торис и меня), when I saw Tars Tarkas surging through the crowd of pygmies (когда я увидел Тарса Таркаса, пробивающегося через толпу пигмеев; to surge — подниматься, вздыматься; нахлынуть) that swarmed about him (которые облепили его; to swarm — толпиться; кишеть; swarm — рой). With one swing of his mighty long sword (каждым взмахом своего громадного меча; mighty — могучий; громадный) he laid a dozen corpses at his feet (он укладывал дюжину трупов у своих ног; corpse — труп), and so he hewed a pathway before him (и таким образом он прокладывал дорогу перед собой; to hew — прорубать; to hew a pathway — прокладывать дорогу) until in another moment he stood upon the platform beside me (пока в следующее мгновение он уже не стоял на возвышении рядом со мной), dealing death and destruction right and left (принося: «раздавая» смерть и разрушения направо и налево).

miracle ['mIrqkl], surge [sWdZ], pygmy ['pIgmI]

The bravery of the Zodangans was awe-inspiring (храбрость зодангианцев внушала трепет; awe — благоговейный страх, трепет), not one attempted to escape (никто из них не пытался спастись), and when the fighting ceased it was because only Tharks remained alive in the great hall (и если битва закончилась, то это случилось только потому, что только тарки остались в живых в огромном зале), other than Dejah Thoris and myself (кроме Дежи Торис и меня).

Sab Than lay dead beside his father (лежал мертвый рядом со своим отцом), and the corpses of the flower of Zodangan nobility and chivalry covered the floor of the bloody shambles (и цвет зодангианской знати и рыцарства покрывал своими телами пол кровавой бойни; shambles — бойня).

awe-inspiring ['O: In" spaIqrIN], alive [q'laIv], chivalry ['SIv(q)lrI], shambles [Sxmblz]
